Etymology ·
One who holds (धारण) the river Gaṅgā in his matted locks (जटा) — Lord Śiva. The episode of Bhagīratha bringing the Gaṅgā down to earth from the heavens, broken by Śiva's hair so its descent would not shatter the earth, is the source narrative.
