Etymology · व्युत्पत्ति
तपस् = हलन्त-लोप → तपस
The root word तपस् carries a final halant (the grammatical stem); as a given name the halant is dropped (तपस), and the English form takes no trailing schwa, so “Tapas”, not “Tapasa”.
Scripture references
Bhagavad Gītā · 7.9
पुण्यो गन्धः पृथिव्यां च तेजश्चास्मि विभावसौ । जीवनं सर्वभूतेषु तपश्चास्मि तपस्विषु ॥
puṇyo gandhaḥ pṛthivyāṃ ca tejaś cāsmi vibhāvasau | jīvanaṃ sarva-bhūteṣu tapaś cāsmi tapasviṣu ||
I am the pure fragrance of the earth and the brightness in fire. I am the life in all living beings and the discipline in those who practise it.
