उशनस् = हलन्त-लोप → उशनस · प्रथमा उशना
The -as stem उशनस् yields two borne forms: उशनस (final halant dropped) and the nominative उशना. The English form takes no trailing schwa.

vṛṣṇīnāṃ vāsudevo 'smi pāṇḍavānāṃ dhanañjayaḥ | munīnām apy ahaṃ vyāsaḥ kavīnām uśanā kaviḥ ||
Among the Vṛṣṇis I am Vāsudeva (Krishna); among the Pāṇḍavas, Arjuna [here called Dhanañjaya]. Among sages I am Vyāsa, and among poets, the wise Uśanā.
